Our Experience Shopping in McKinney Texas

Downtown McKinney totally surprised us — in the best way possible! We had no idea it was so big, with so much to see, do, and eat. Seriously, the food options alone were next-level. It gave us major Downtown Grapevine vibes… just bigger and busier! Downtown McKinney is walkable, friendly, and charming. Historic buildings line the streets with colorful shop windows and quirky signs. You’ll see families and groups of friends chatting on patios, folks licking double scoop ice cream cones on the sidewalks, and grannies who moonlight as professional antique hunters.

We came for the Farmer’s Market and shopping in McKinney, Texas, and ended up falling for the city’s upbeat, family-friendly vibe. Even with a dedicated parking garage and lot, the area was bustling, and we had to park across the street. But honestly? That just proved what everyone else already knew: there are tons of wonderful things to do in McKinney. While downtown McKinney may not be a hidden gem, it’s still an absolute diamond. You’ll find locally made goods, fresh market finds, and charming storefronts all within a few walkable blocks. We spent a blissful morning and afternoon strolling the streets — and we want you to experience the same joy. So grab a reusable tote… you’re definitely going to need it!

McKinney Farmers Market

We suggest you start your day at the Chestnut Square Farmers Market, one of the best in the state. No seriously, it’s award-winning — and you can taste why. Local honey, farm-fresh eggs, handmade soaps, salsa that will ruin store-bought jars for you forever… it’s all here.

The setting is equally charming. You’re walking around historic homes turned into little cottage businesses. There are often live musicians playing acoustic sets and vendors serving up hot food and seasonal pastries. And it’s totally child and dog friendly! We saw a ton of people walking their furry friends and pushing fancy strollers. So stop by, even if only to browse, and if you’re in the mood for it, grab a snack to keep you going — you’ve got a crawl to do.

Some things to note:

  • McKinney Farmers Market is open every Saturday, year round, but only until noon!
  • April – Dec (8:00am-12:00pm), Jan-March (9am-12:00pm)
  • Even though there is dedicated parking, you have to go early to secure it. Otherwise, park across the street from the Farmer’s Market, next to all the 9-5 businesses that closed for the weekend. We circled the parking garage for at least 20 minutes so if you’re arriving past 10am, learn from us.

Shopping in McKinney Texas

Now the fun part. When shopping in McKinney, Texas, yes, you’ll find cute clothes and trendy decor, but you’ll also find a yarn store, a legit antique mall, and more than one shop where you walk in and go, “What even is this place — and why do I want to buy everything?”

Some local favorites:

  • McKinney Knittery – If you’re crafty (or craft-curious), this is your spot. Beautiful yarns, cozy vibes, and a surprisingly helpful staff if you have no idea what you’re doing.
  • The Antique Company Mall – Endless rooms. Endless treasures. It’s part scavenger hunt, part history lesson, and part home decor inspo.
  • The Book Shoppe – Cozy and quiet, with a curated selection of reads and friendly owners who love to chat books. Independent bookstore energy at its finest.
  • White Rock Soap Gallery – Handmade everything. Think candles, bath bombs, beard oils, and more.
  • My Favorite Room – A stunning boutique for home decor, florals, and elegant gifts. Very Fixer Upper vibes.
  • Fair & Square Imports – Ethical goods from around the globe — jewelry, textiles, and unique gifts and souvenirs.

Honestly? There is a lot more than what we’ve listed. For example, we found a Parisian clothes store hidden away down an unassuming set of stairs. Downtown McKinney rewards wanderers, so go ahead and peek down that alleyway or step inside that store you can’t quite figure out from the outside. You’re sure to find something worthwhile.

Downtown McKinney Food

After all that browsing (and buying), you’ll have earned a snack or maybe an entire meal.

Start with Hugs Cafe. It’s a charming little coffee shop with a mission. They hire and train individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities — and they serve one mean latte.

If you’re craving something more plant-forward (literally), check out Habitat Plants + Coffee. Yes, it’s a plant shop, and it’s also a coffee bar. Grab a cold brew and a new monstera while you’re at it. You deserve it.

For lunch or dinner, head to The Yard. You’ll find laid-back outdoor seating, string lights, and a menu full of Texas favorites — burgers, brisket, fried pickles, you name it. It’s great for groups, dog-friendly, and usually buzzing with activity.

And if you want something sweet, this area has you covered with old-school soda shops, candy counters, and a vintage-style ice cream parlor where they’ll scoop it into a waffle cone and make your inner child cry with joy.

Oh! And technically this isn’t in Downtown McKinney Square, but it is nearby and worth the drive. Head slightly outside the square to Escape 360, a breakfast/lunch spot with amazing ambiance, sleek interiors, and the fluffiest pancakes you’ve ever seen! We love fluffy pancakes. They’re a little overhyped, but they’re also amazing and so fun. We tried them in Asia and can’t get enough. Pair that with Escape 360’s loaded avocado toast and you’ve got a meal that looks straight off your IG feed.
