The Best Japanese Chocolate Is Now in DFW

The best chocolate we’ve ever had was in Japan, and until recently, that was about the only place you could get it. However, now, all you need to do is drive to Carrollton, TX and ROYCE’ will be waiting for you. It’s not just the best Japanese chocolate; it might just be the best chocolate ever.

Our Experience

We were stunned — but in the best way possible. Just a few months ago, we’d been at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, checking off the final item on our to-do list before leaving the country: stock up on ROYCE’ chocolate.

We’d been to Asia many times and we knew what we were doing. ROYCE’ freezes well, travels well, and — most importantly — tastes phenomenal. We picked up limited edition flavors like Sakura (the best chocolate we’ve ever tasted, no exaggeration) and Matcha (also delicious). Then we came home, threw a party, and somehow burned through our carefully hoarded stash in record time.

We’ve savored chocolate in Paris and Belgium, chatted up local chocolatiers, and taken our sweet tooth seriously for years now — but ROYCE’ still takes the top spot for us. There’s something unforgettable about the way it melts on your tongue — delicate, rich, and perfectly balanced. Japanese chocolate might just be our forever weakness. One bite, and you’ll understand the hype.

Say What?

Imagine our surprise when, months after having arrived home from Japan, we found ourselves standing in front of a ROYCE’ storefront in Carrollton, Texas. We honestly had to rub our eyes and double check. Was there a different ROYCE’ chocolate we didn’t know about? But no, it was one and the same.

The first time we visited, the store was closed (tragedy), so we didn’t blog about it right away. We’ve been burned by sister locations before, and we weren’t going to recommend something that wasn’t as good as the original. But we returned — and it did not disappoint. 10 out of 10 quality control. The store is small, super sleek, and very put together. And the chocolate? Just as good as the chocolate we had in Tokyo. They had samples. We tried the dark semi-sweet. It knocked us over. Again, this stuff is seriously so good!

History and Basic Information

Discovering the Best Japanese Chocolate in Dallas

ROYCE’ started in Sapporo, Japan, back in 1983, and if you’re wondering how a place known for snowy winters and perfect ski slopes ended up making some of the best chocolate on the planet… yeah, we wondered too. But somehow, they nailed it. The company is known for their Nama chocolates, which are these square, velvety truffle-adjacent bites that melt the second they hit your tongue. They’ve got that signature dusting of cocoa powder and always come in sleek little boxes that make you feel like you should be eating them on a bullet train or something. However, our favorite classic flavor is the “Venezuela Bitter & Ghana Sweet”, the chocolate that comes in thin, circular, individually-wrapped pieces.

Originally, ROYCE’ was only sold in Japan and a few select international airports — think high-end duty-free counters that always tempt you, even when your wallet is empty and you’re running late for your flight. It’s one of those brands that doesn’t advertise much but has a cult following anyway, because once you try it, you get it.

Be on the Lookout for the Best Japanese Chocolate!

Most ROYCE’ chocolate stores are still in Japan or scattered across airports around the world, but if you’re searching for ROYCE’ chocolate near you, you’re in luck. You’ll find this delectable brand of chocolate not only in New York City, Chicago, and Las Vegas — but also right here in North Texas! The Frisco boutique sits next to 99 Ranch Market, and the Carrollton location is tucked into a 99 Ranch Market plaza too. It feels like a hidden gem — seriously, blink and you’ll miss it.

But inside, it’s pristine, elegant, and stacked with all the ROYCE’ staples: Nama, wafers, those thin circle bites we were talking about earlier and so much more! Despite being shipped from Hokkaido, everything tastes wonderfully fresh, and the staff is super sweet. They’re also happy to let you try a variety of samples before you commit.

And FYI: They also sell the special flavors like Sakura when they’re in season. These sister locations are the real deal!

Now let’s get something out of the way: if you should ever see Sakura Nama in stock, buy it immediately. Do not hesitate — do not wait — do not pass go. It’s floral, gently sweet, and somehow captures a spring breeze in chocolate form. Sadly, it’s seasonal. You’ll only find it in spring (we’re hoping we can buy before they run out of stock next year 🤞🏽 Update: We did!).

We’re loyal to Nama chocolate. The texture is soft and fudgy. We also love Matcha. It’s earthy and a little bitter (in the best way), and ROYCE’ rotates in other flavors throughout the year. They had Champagne and Mild Cacao this time. It’s giving…luxury airport lounge, but you can take it home and eat it in your pajamas.

Pro tip: freeze them. They keep for months (okay, years) and somehow taste just as good when chilled.

Final Review and Recommendation

We’d fly for this chocolate. Low-key, we have. But now we don’t have to, because it’s in Carrollton and Frisco, and the stores are just as solid as anything you’d find overseas. ROYCE’ is the kind of spot you swing by on a date night when you want to impress someone or honestly, when you just want to feel indulgent and treat yourself to the best Japanese chocolate.

It’s perfect for gifting too, especially if you’re trying to look classy. Just say “ROYCE’” and watch people’s eyebrows raise as you convert them.

Some things to know:

Remember, the Carrollton location isn’t inside the HMart complex — it’s actually in the 99 Ranch plaza. Also, it closes at 7 PM, so plan your sweet visit accordingly!

Parking is free, but the lot is usually packed. Be patient and circle a few times — it’s worth it. They’ve got the good stuff.
