25+ Unique Things to Do in DFW – Some Only in Texas!

We’ve become experts at finding unique things to do in DFW. Listen, we love a good restaurant or a pretty park. But if we’re actually making the effort to leave our house, we want the day to be memorable — something charming, maybe strange, and specific enough that six months later we’re saying, “Remember when we did that?”

A young woman laughs as her friend’s reflection appears in a kaleidoscope-style mirrored public art installation, highlighting one of the unique-things-to-do-in-dfw.

That’s this list.

Here’s What’s Up Dallas!

Experiences You Won’t Find on a Normal Dallas Attractions List

If you’ve already Googled “things to do in Dallas” and the usual list isn’t doing it for you anymore, don’t sweat it. Here are three activities not enough people talk about.

1. Have Dinner with a Murder Mystery | Texas Star Dinner Theater

A friend of ours works here, which is how we originally found out about Texas Star Dinner Theater — and oh my gosh, we’re so glad she was repping it because this is so much fun!

Family and friends pose with costumed actors during an interactive 1800s Wild West murder mystery dinner at Texas Star Dinner Theater, a unique-things-to-do-in-dfw experience.

If you’re looking for unique things to do in DFW, this Old West murder mystery definitely belongs on your list. Everyone’s in character. You get dinner and dessert, and somewhere between eating and laughing, you need to pay attention because there’s a mystery to solve. At the end, you make your guess and find out whether you were right!

2. Step Inside a Netflix Show | Netflix House at Galleria Dallas

Experience Netflix in Real Life

Yes, Netflix has a house now, and yes, you can visit!

Netflix House Dallas is a permanent, year-round, 100,000+ square-foot entertainment space inside Galleria Mall where you can eat, shop, play games and quite literally step inside worlds based on Netflix shows. These immersive experiences are based around popular shows like Stranger Things and Squid Game.

Dallas is home to one of only two Netflix Houses country, so you should go! The paid experiences can get expensive, but if you’ve got money to burn and want something you’ll remember doing, this belongs on the list.

3. Disappear Into Another Dimension | Meow Wolf: The Real Unreal

Meow Wolf’s The Real Unreal is a permanent immersive art installation at Grapevine Mills. The easiest (and cheesiest) way to describe it is: you start in a plain, suburban house that seems relatively normal and then reality gets unreal.

Ordinary-looking exterior of Meow Wolf’s immersive art installation, concealing a surreal world of hidden spaces, interactive art, and mysterious storylines—one of the unique-things-to-do-in-dfw.
Meow Wolf has permanent exhibitions in six different cities, and each installation is its own world.
We’re still amazed we have one right here in DFW!

There are hidden spaces, things to touch, story lines to investigate, and details that don’t make any sense until you start piecing them together. As a visitor, you can wander around and take very strange photos, but you can also follow the mystery and try to figure out what happened to the family at the center of it all.

Things You Can Pretty Much Only Do in North Texas

There’s a difference between touristy and boring. These next four activities could make any Dallas itinerary, but they’re also among the most unique things to do in Dallas Fort-Worth. Why? Because they feel unmistakably Texan; they’re DFW must-dos!

4. Watch the Fort Worth Herd Cattle Drive | Stockyards

A twice-daily longhorn cattle drive through Downtown Fort Worth? Come on. That’s cool.

The Fort Worth Herd of longhorn cattle moves down East Exchange Avenue during the Fort Worth Stockyards Cattle Drive, a free daily attraction and one of the unique-things-to-do-in-dfw.

The Fort Worth Herd comes down East Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards every day at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., weather permitting, and it’s completely free to watch. Fort Worth calls it the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive. If you’ve never seen a Longhorn up close, their horns are spectacularly enormous.

Make a Fort Worth day out of it while you’re there. See the cattle drive, catch a rodeo, go to Billy Bob’s for a Honky Tonk, and then head downtown to the Fort Worth Water Gardens.

5. Walk Dallas’s Art Deco Fairgrounds | Fair Park

Fair Park (a major area in Dallas) was transformed for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition, and the buildings, sculptures, murals, fountains and decorative details left behind make the grounds completely different from the rest of Dallas. The park is now a National Historic Landmark, and according to Fair Park, the only intact, unaltered pre-1950s world’s fair site in the United States.

Commemorative statue of a solemn woman inside Dallas Fair Park honoring the builders of the State Fair of Texas, a unique-things-to-do-in-dfw attraction.

And you can explore it for free.

Obviously, if you come during the State Fair of Texas, that’s a whole separate experience. But we ] think Fair Park deserves to be seen even when there isn’t a giant fair happening. Slow down. Look at the murals (there are so many!). Walk the Esplanade (the fountain is huge). Take pictures in front of the buildings (Wow. Gorgeous!).

6. Investigate JFK’s Assassination | Downtown Dallas

This is mainstream tourism, but it is also something you literally cannot replicate elsewhere. Literally, there is nowhere else in the world you can do this.

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dealey Plaza on November 22, 1963, and many of the locations involved are still right here in downtown Dallas. Start at the grassy knoll and head toward The Sixth Floor Museum, which now tells the story of Kennedy’s presidency, assassination and legacy (all from the same building where investigators found the sniper’s perch).

Family listens to a guide while walking through Dealey Plaza on a JFK Dallas tour, a unique-things-to-do-in-dfw history experience.

We’ve also done a guided JFK tour and would 10/10 recommend that if you’re interested in the history — or the enormous universe of questions and conspiracies surrounding it.

It’s somber, fascinating and very, very Dallas.

7. Eat Your Way Through DFW’s Asian Districts

DFW’s Asian districts are one of our favorite things about the metroplex!

A Dallasite leaps with joy in front of Royal Korea Town Plaza in Dallas’ original Koreatown, one of the unique-things-to-do-in-dfw.
Things to do in Dallas

Carrollton is the place to go for Korean food, especially around Old Denton Road. We love ZimZim, Royce Chocolate, and also just wandering through H Mart and grabbing whatever looks good. There’s also a second Koreatown in Dallas.

Richardson has tons of Chinese and Taiwanese spots, plus plenty of bakeries, markets and smaller restaurants to try. Jeng Chi in Richardson/ DFW Chinatown is a great one to start with—get the soup dumplings.

Friends pose before a Korean feast at Kooksoo Korean Restaurant in Plano, with noodles, rice, kimchi, soup, lamb chops, and chicken on the table, a unique-things-to-do-in-dfw experience.
Kooksoo

Plano and Frisco have a huge mix of Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese food. We like Kooksoo, Kura Revolving Sushi Bar (quality varies across locations) and Yi Fang for Taiwanese fruit tea. There are so many options!

Metroplex Museums That Get Increasingly More Specific

Dallas-Fort Worth has the major art and science museums you’d expect from a metro area this large. But that’s not what you’re here for. You want unique things to do in DFW. So we’re starting relatively normal and descending into weirdness.

Some of these museums have genuinely major collections. The National Videogame Museum in Frisco, for example, has a collection that people to travel to see. The National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame says it’s the only museum in the world dedicated to the women who shaped the American West. The Samurai Collection is the only museum of its kind in the USA, and The Fort Worth Bureau of Engraving and Printing lets you walk above an actual production floor and watch U.S. currency being printed.

  1. National Videogame Museum | Frisco
  2. Museum of Illusions| Dallas
  3. Samurai Collection | Dallas
  4. Haas Moto Museum | Dallas
  5. Dallas Firefighters Museum | Dallas
  6. National Medal of Honor Museum | Arlington
  7. Bureau of Engraving and Printing | Fort Worth
  8. National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame | Fort Worth
  9. The Warehouse Dallas Art Foundation | Fort Worth
  10. International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame
  11. Vintage Flying Museum | Fort Worth
  12. Barney Smith’s Toilet Seat Art Museum
  13. North American Cryptid Museum / Dark Hour

And then we’ve got the other end of the spectrum.

Young man reacts with mock fear beside a life-size Bigfoot replica in a forest setting The North American Cryptid Museum in Plano houses a life-size Bigfoot replica, one of the unique-things-to-do-in-dfw.

There is an entire museum containing more than 1,400 decorated toilet seats upstairs at Truck Yard in The Colony. There is now a North American Cryptid Museum inside Dark Hour in Plano with a life-size Bigfoot, Mothman and other creatures pulled from folklore and eyewitness accounts. And you know, why not? You only live once.

Very DFW Day Trips

Day trips are the best trips! You get to go somewhere completely new but still sleep in your own bed at the end of the night. And the best thing about day trips (at least for Dallasites) is that unique things to do in DFW aren’t limited to the Metroplex—there are so many incredible places just a short drive away!

21. Visit the World’s Largest Flea Market | Canton

We’re cheating here because this isn’t DFW, but it’s only an hour away! Spend a day wandering a small city built out of flea-market booths. People travel from other states for this! It’s famous, bizarrely huge and very regional.

Getting into it, First Monday Trade Days in Canton is enormous. We are not exaggerating The official site calls it the world’s largest flea market: roughly 450 acres with more than 5,000 vendors selling antiques, clothes, furniture, collectibles, food and an astonishing amount of stuff.

22. Drive Through a Safari, Then Hunt for Dinosaur Tracks | Glen Rose

This is our favorite North Texas day trip, and you get two for one!

A giraffe peers toward a vehicle at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, where visitors can experience wildlife up close, one of the unique-things-to-do-in-dfw.

First, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. You drive your own car through the safari, feeding giraffes out of the palm of your hand, snapping photos with zebras and seeing all kinds of animals you definitely don’t expect to find roaming around Texas. There’s also a children’s animal center where you can hang out with goats and other animals. It’s awesome! 100/10.

Child places a small hand inside a three-toed dinosaur track in the Paluxy River at Dinosaur Valley State Park, one of the unique-things-to-do-in-dfw.

Then, while you’re already in Glen Rose, head over to Dinosaur Valley State Park and see real, honest-to-God dinosaur tracks along the Paluxy River. It’s pretty awe-inspiring if you think about it. There are hiking trails too, so you can easily spend a few hours exploring. If you go early enough, you can do everything, so do it!

23. Pick Your Own Flowers, Fruit — or Christmas Tree

North Texas has a surprisingly awesome number of places where you can go pick the thing yourself. Tulips. Strawberries. Blueberries. Blackberries. Sunflowers. Pumpkins. You can even go cut down your own Christmas tree!

Blueberries hang from a branch at a North Texas U-pick farm, one of the seasonal unique-things-to-do-in-dfw for families and friends.

Obviously, these are very seasonal, so don’t just drive out to a farm and hope something is growing. Check what’s in season first. But when the timing works, boy does it work! #SuperMemorable!

24. Spend an Afternoon at Lavender Ridge Farms | Gainesville

We lied! Maybe Lavender Ridge Farms is our favorite North Texas day trip. Gosh, it’s just so hard to choose.

Young girl with ponytails and her mother photograph bumble bees among colorful spring flowers at Lavender Ridge Farms, a delightful unique-things-to-do-in-dfw outdoor activity.

This place is so idyllic. You can eat lunch at the little café tucked back in the trees, wander through the plant nursery, shop for lavender soap and other things you did not come there to buy (but do in fact need), and then go hang out with the donkeys and other animals.

Three scoops of lavender ice cream drizzled with lavender syrup and served with biscotti at Lavender Ridge Farm Cafe, a delicious unique-things-to-do-in-dfw experience.

And blessed days, they put lavender in everything! Lavender lemonade. Lavender honey chicken salad. Lavender cheesecake. Lavender ice cream.

Unfortunately, Lavender Ridge won’t have a lavender bloom for the 2026 season because the weather didn’t cooperate, but the main draw is not the small lavender field but rather the atmosphere (and also the café, apothecary, gardens and animals).

Fun Things You Just Have to Catch at the Right Time

Most of these experiences aren’t exclusive to Texas. But they’re unusual and delightful enough to earn a spot on our list of unique things to do in DFW—especially since a lot of people don’t even know they’re happening until they’re already over.

25. Feed Butterflies at Kiwanis Butterfly Festival | Keller

If you have never stood in the middle of a butterfly release, put this on your list! Keller’s Kiwanis Butterfly Festival (not to be confused with Grapevine’s annual Butterfly Flutterby) celebrates the monarch migration with live butterfly releases and activities!

Close-up of a monarch butterfly with orange and black patterned wings resting on a flower at a butterfly festival, a unique-things-to-do-in-dfw experience.

We have done this butterfly festival before, and the pictures speak for themselves. We had butterflies sitting in our hands. We don’t know how to make that sound more compelling. Go feed a butterfly.

26. Watch Ghibli Movies on the Big Screen | Studio Ghibli Fest

This one is national, not DFW-specific, but we feel like too many people don’t know it exists. Every year, Studio Ghibli movies return to theaters around the country for Studio Ghibli Fest, which means you can see movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away on an actual movie screen instead of your television.

And they’re shown in both dubbed and subtitled versions. The 2026 lineup runs through October and includes anniversary screenings of Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away, among others.

The Studio Ghibli Fest 2026 runs from June through October in theaters nationwide, including major Dallas-area chains like AMC Theatres and DFW spots like Galaxy Theatres Grandscape in The Colony

We love Studio Ghibli, so obviously we think this is fantastic.

27. Spend a Day in the 16th Century | Scarborough Renaissance Festival

Renaissance festivals happen all over, but Scarborough is huge (everything’s bigger in Texas, remember?). There is just so much to do!

You’ve got jousting, shows, costumes, archery, games, shops, food — the whole thing. But we especially love all the old-school crafts. You can watch people doing blacksmithing, glassblowing, woodwork and other traditional trades. There are demonstrations happening all over the festival.

Dress up if you want. You’ll see plenty of that. Either way, you can wander around for at least a few hours and keep finding something new.

28. Get Completely Covered in Color | Holi Festival

Holi is probably our favorite cultural festival to attend. We’ve been going for years now, and it is so much fun!

Two friends dance and celebrate amid clouds of colorful powder at a Holi celebration in DFW, one of the vibrant unique-things-to-do-in-dfw.

Revelers throw bright colored powder at each other, and everybody dances. Beautiful, no? there’s music, food, drummers and more food. But honestly, the dancing is best part. Before long the entire crowd is jumping and covered in color.

There are several Holi celebrations around DFW, including in Dallas, Frisco and Bedford, so if you’ve never been to one before, go. It’s such a good time. And wear something you don’t care about because you are not leaving the same color you came in.

29. Go to a Hot Air Balloon Festival

We went to a Hot Air Balloon Festival on a complete whim one weekend, and we had a great time! Such a unique experience — and yes, it was pretty dang fun!

Vibrant red and multicolored hot air balloon rises at the Plano Balloon Festival, with its burner blazing and another colorful balloon in the background, a unique-things-to-do-in-dfw experience.

There are dozens of huge, hot-air balloons which you get to see up close and watch take off into the sky. Then you add food trucks, vendors, music, random festival activities, and badda bing, badda boom — now it’s a festival.

DFW’s big balloon festival is the Plano Balloon Festival, which has been around for more than four decades! BUT it is super crowded, y’all. Thankfully, there are plenty of local hot air balloon festivals too. Whatever you choose, you should go to such a festival at least once!

You Made it!

And that’s our list of 25+ unique things to do in DFW!

Some of these are “only-in-Texas” experiences. Some are just wonderfully weird, and a few we threw in simply because they’re a bucket of fun.

Between the murder mysteries, secret rooms, longhorns walking down the city street, and dinosaur tracks, hopefully, you found at least a few things on here that you haven’t done before. More importantly, we hope you go out and have a really, really good time.

Make a memory, and If you’re looking for even more things to do in DFW, we’ve got you! You can also check out our other Dallas-Fort Worth guides for more ideas.

Until next time, keep it weird and keep it fun!
