The Joy of Momos: Dumplings You’ll Love!

If you’ve never tried Nepali cuisine, you’re missing out! Known for its rich, aromatic flavors, Nepali food does have a standout favorite: momos, a type of Himilayan dumpling. Nepali momos, filled with seasoned veggies or meat and typically steamed to perfection, are a beloved street food with incredible flavor.

Nepalese Food is Amazing, But Momos Steal the Show!

We love Nepalese food — and we really love momos. So, imagine our surprise (and excitement!) to find our favorite Nepali dish right here in DFW! Our first momo experience was in Toronto, Canada, at an international food hub that blew us away with its incredible flavors. The moment we bit into our first momo, we were hooked. It was later that we found out that momos are traditionally Tibetan! Yes, it’s true. Momos were introduced to Nepal by Tibetan traders and became widely popular across the country, evolving into a beloved staple of Nepali cuisine. Hooray for fun facts! #OriginStory

To be honest, we didn’t think there’d be a Tibetan or Nepali food joint in Dallas Fort-Worth. I mean, where? It seemed so unlikely. The answer: everywhere!

Most Nepalese and Tibetan food is clustered in Irving, however, there are also restaurants in Frisco, Denton and beyond. All you have to do is pick a spot from the list below. Then, you can stuff your face with momos galore!

Here’s What’s Up Dallas!

Gotta give Cafe Mandu its props! This place serves all different kinds of momos, and it’s a vibe. There are always Nepali music videos playing in the background and lots of chatter. Most importantly, it follows our golden restaurant rule: When people from that culture are eating there, you should be eating there. Check. ✅ Yep! In all seriousness, this spot is great if you’re out late! It’s open until 12am on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 2am on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Amazing! We recommend the noodles and the pan-fried momos.

This one’s fun because it’s combining Mediterranean and Himalayan flavor. It’s a subtle fusion restaurant. That’s right! Plus, its menu ranges far beyond momos, including actual entrees that provide a delicious, healthy dinner. Be warned: the menu does lean more Mediterranean, but if you love Mediterranean food and simply want to try momos as well, then boom! Head to Frisco and grab yourself a Kebab with a side of momos.

We don’t know what it is about food trucks, but sometimes they have the best food. And would you believe it? Denton has a food truck — open every day from 3:00 to 11:30pm — that’s dedicated to serving up momos and other delicious, Himalayan yum yums. Hand-kneaded dough, fresh veggies, halal ground chicken, and fresh spices — Nepalese food at its finest. Need we say more?

We will always love Cafe Mandu, if only for its late hours, but there are other spots out there, perhaps offering even tastier treats. Personally, we’re on a mission to visit all of the momo spots in Irving, starting with Momo2Go. That food looks Yummy with a capital “Y”. We also found a drool-worthy online recipe, so we might try our luck in the kitchen too! #MoMos #MomosNepalese #MomoDumpling

We will of course keep you updated, and as always, if you want to learn more about things to do in Dallas and things to eat in DFW, subscribe to our monthly newsletter. And check out our other posts on DFW Food!
